'Freak accident' after diving into Okanagan Lake leaves BC teen with a broken neck

A BC family is rallying together and asking the community for help after 16-year-old Gavin Kamoschinski became seriously injured during a trip to Kelowna earlier this month.

On Aug. 2, Gavin was swimming in Okanagan Lake and dove off a dock at Hobson Beach.

The normal beach day turned tragic when Gavin broke his neck in a “freak accident.”

It was later determined that he fractured his C5, C6, and C7 vertebrae.

Gavin was rushed to Kelowna General Hospital and then flown to Vancouver General Hospital, where he went through a five hour surgery to fuse the vertebrae to stabilize his neck.

Unfortunately, at this time, Gavin has no movement in his hands or legs.

“They are keeping him sedated to keep his heart rate up to maximize the healing of his damaged spinal cord,” says a GoFundMe set up by Kimberly Fenske and Lisa Kamoschinski.

“At this time we don’t know the full picture of his recovery. TIME is healing. However, the road will be long and uncharted.”

The fundraiser goes on to say that Gavin has been putting in a significant amount of time and work towards his football career.

However, his promising future was forced to be placed on hold.

All funds raised will go directly to the family and be used to help them navigate this time and the added expenses associated with this accident.

So far, more than $65,000 of the $100,000 goal has been raised.
