Kelowna's Kangaroo Creek Farm announces opening date and dog park idea

One of the most popular Central Okanagan attractions for residents and tourists is just less than a month away from opening for 2021.

Kelowna’s Kangaroo Creek Farm (KCF) announced in March that it will be opening for the spring and summer on Thursday, April 29.

Things might look a little different this year, at least for a few weeks, due to COVID-19 restrictions, but more details will be provided on that closer to opening day.

Announcing our opening date: Thursday, April 29th. Happy Spring everyone!

Their opening date isn’t the only thing KCF announced recently, as they also took to social media to reveal plans for a dog park at the farm.

It won’t be your typical dog park, however, as KCF will be supplying the dogs!

“I know that's a bit weird, but we got the idea from watching children playing with our brown lab Quigley,” said the KCF post.

“He was SUCH a good dog. The kids loved him, and he loved the kids. It was a win/win situation for sure. Unfortunately, Quigley died of cancer when he was only nine.”

The idea was to adopt a number of senior dogs for the farm, even dogs that have medical issues, but they haven’t had much luck trying to obtain this type of animal from the BC SPCA or local humane societies.

Our new dog park opens at the farm this coming season. But before you tell your dog, and get him all excited, I should...

Now, the plan has shifted and KCF is thinking of letting people have their dogs basically audition for a spot on the farm, which would allow them to come play and interact with guests on certain days.

“In other words, if you want your dog to have a regular play-date or day-care gig out at the farm, you'd need to bring him by for a meet and greet,” explained the post.

“Obviously we are looking for dogs who are very friendly and who are not so energetic that they knock people down. They need to be absolutely trustworthy towards children and play well with other dogs.”

KCF added that there would be no requirement for dogs to stay all day or for any period of time, as even hour- or two-hour-long sessions would be ideal.

Stay tuned in the coming weeks for more information on the farm’s dog park idea.
