New MRI machines coming to KGH, will more than double scan capacity

The capacity for Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scans at Kelowna General Hospital (KGH) will more than double in two years.

Today, British Columbia’s Ministry of Health announced that a new 3T MRI machine will be installed at KGH, while an existing 1.5T MRI machine will be replaced.

As a result, the capacity for scans done at KGH will increase from approximately 7,000 to 15,000 per year.

"The addition of the new MRI and replacement of the existing MRI at Kelowna General Hospital means shorter wait times and better treatment plans for people in Kelowna and surrounding communities,” explained Adrian Dix, minister of health.

According to the Province, the new and replacement machines will also reduce the length of scans, which means a shorter turnaround between patients. They will also produce higher-quality images.

"By adding these new MRI machines, we'll be able to reduce the time people are waiting to access these important diagnostic services," said Susan Brown, Interior Health's president and CEO.

Considered state-of-the-art units, they will be able to diagnose complex conditions like neurological disease, certain heart diseases and prostate cancer.

"Investing in cutting-edge technology and state-of-the-art equipment will help support the health-care sector and ensure residents get the care they need," noted Loyal Wooldridge, Kelowna councillor and Central Okanagan Regional Hospital District board chair.

The cost of the project is $30.7 million. The KGH Foundation will contribute $5 million, the CORHD will pitch in just over $10 million and the rest will be covered by the Province.

Following a competitive bidding process, the construction management services contract was awarded to Bird Construction Group.

Work will begin this summer and is anticipated to be complete in 2025, with no planned disruption in services during that time.
