Kelowna’s dedicated gluten-free brewery has received gold for its Quick Witted beer.
Grey Fox Brewing, which opened less than six months ago, won best in class for gluten-free beer at the Canadian Brewing Awards and Conference (CBAC) in Halifax over the weekend.
“Quick Witted is a Belgian wheat style, but being gluten free, we can't use wheat,” explains Chris Neufeld, the founder and brewmaster of Grey Fox Brewing.
“We replicated the taste and the mouth feel by softening our typical base malt of millet and rice with some quinoa, and we also added a little buckwheat to give it a bit of a flavour boost.”
As orange peel and coriander are typically used for this style of beer, both were included in Quick Witted.
“We think we replicated the style perfectly, and so did the judges at the Canadian Brewing Awards,” Neufeld adds.
CBAC brings together more than 500 brewers from craft breweries across Canada to share ideas, learn from industry experts and discover the latest innovations in the brewing industry.
To conclude the three-day conference, the best beers and breweries were recognized with awards on June 3.
Overall, 39 BC breweries won 51 awards, including 16 golds, 17 silvers, 12 bronze medals and six honourable mentions.
