The Stanley Cup finals kicked off last night, (with an epic 3-2 Avalanche OT victory), which means that unfortunately, there are only potentially six more games left in the NHL season.
However, for those still looking to get their fix of hockey, you are in luck, as the new 3ICE league will begin play this weekend.
3ICE is 3x3 hockey, with two eight minute halves and a running clock. In lieu of power plays, penalty shots will be utilized. And instead of overtime, do-or-die penalty shots will also be used. Additionally, pucks that come off the netting above the glass will still be inbounds and playable. The full list of rules are here.
The league is attempting to replicate the fast-paced excitement of the NHL overtime sessions.
3ICE will exist as a rotating tour-stop, similar to the BIG3 basketball tournament. At each tour stop, there will be six games, three in the opening round, two semi-finals and then a championship match.
As for the teams, there are six, coached by a heavy hitting list of hockey greats like Grant Fuhr, Guy Carbonneau, Bryan Trottier and John LeClair.
Matt Revel will be a part of team Murphy (named after four-time Cup winner Larry Murphy). The 26-year old spent parts of four seasons with the Kamloops Blazers, and in 2015-16 had 53 points in 66 games played.
The Abbotsford native was traded to the Portland Winterhawks in the middle of the 2016-17 season. He then attended UBC, playing the past four seasons for the program.
You will be able to watch all the action of 3ICE on TSN, with round one taking place on Saturday, June 18 from Las Vegas, Nevada.
