Earlier this week, news broke of a multi-vehicle crash near Thompson Rivers University that killed one athlete on the men’s volleyball team and seriously injured two others.
The student-athlete who passed away has been identified as Owyn McInnis and a scholarship fund has been created in his memory.
“Owyn was a son, brother, fiancé, teammate and so much more,” reads a TRU news release.
“He brightened the day of anyone lucky enough to talk with him and we miss him greatly.”
The scholarship fund was created with the help of two anonymous donors and an initial contribution of $20,000.
“Owyn's legacy will live on through the Owyn McInnis Memorial Men's Volleyball Athletic Award,” adds the news release.
Donations to the fund can be made online at this link.
“Thank you to everyone who has reached out over the past few days,” continues the news release.
“At a time of heartache, your love and support has been felt.”
McInnis was a fourth-year student who graduated with honours from Mohawk College and an Academic All-Canadian in the 2022-23 season.
The outside hitter joined the WolfPack in the 2021-22 season, coming to Kamloops from his hometown of Guelph, ON.
