BC man handed $8K fine, hunting suspension for illegally killing moose and elk

A man has been handed a hefty fine and hunting ban for illegally killing an elk and moose in northern BC.

According to the BC Conservation Officer Service (BC COS), an investigation was launched in 2019 following a report to the RAPP line.

In September 2020, a man was arrested near Smithers for possessing an illegal bull elk.

Later that month, the same man was arrested during a road check near Burns Lake while being in possession of an illegal bull moose, which the BC COS said was killed near Vanderhoof.

An investigation led by the General Investigations Section and supported by field officers and First Nations, including the Wet’suwet’en Nation hereditary chief and the Saik'uz First Nation in Vanderhoof led to charges.

Jeff Gladstone was convicted on two counts of hunting, taking, trapping, wounding or killing wildlife out of season, a violation under the Wildlife Act.

An $8,050 penalty was issued as well as a three-year hunting suspension banning him from hunting outside of his traditional territory, the BC COS said.
