Passenger dies, driver survives after vehicle flips off BC highway

Police are trying to piece together the puzzle of a single-vehicle crash that claimed one life in northern BC.

Emergency crews were dispatched to the scene on Hwy 16, around 25 kilometres west of Terrace, shortly after 6:30 pm on Aug. 27.

When the RCMP and BC Highway Patrol (BCHP) arrived, they found a sedan upside down in a ditch next to the highway.

Despite the best efforts of first responders, the 35-year-old old passenger, a man from Prince Rupert, died from his injuries.

The male driver survived and was rushed to hospital for his injuries, police said.

According to the BCHP, alcohol and drugs are not believed to be contributing factors to the fatal crash.

The Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service attended the scene and is investigating, while the BCHP continues to look for witnesses to the crash.

Anyone who saw the incident, or has dash cam footage of the crash or events leading up to it, is urged to contact the BCHP Smithers branch at 250-847-3233.
