Three days after a fatal hit-and-run in northern BC, police have confirmed that the suspect has left the country.
“Officers have identified the driver, who has since fled Canada,” says an update from the Terrace RCMP published early this afternoon.
The incident happened in the early hours of Sunday morning in the community of Thornhill, just east of Terrace across the Skeena River.
In a release issued Monday, police said they believe the man was struck by a vehicle between 2:30-3 am and he was declared dead at the scene.
According to the RCMP, evidence obtained Tuesday led investigators to identify the suspect vehicle as being owned by a local taxi company.
“Officers have since located the vehicle and seized it,” an RCMP release noted. “The local company has worked with the Terrace RCMP and are fully cooperating in the investigation to determine the cause of the motor-vehicle incident.”
Although no information was provided on the suspect other than they had left the country, police said they are “working tirelessly” to bring the matter to the BC Prosecution Service for charge assessment.
No further details are being released by the RCMP at this time.
