On Saturday afternoon Kelowna’s 7th annual Vaisakhi Parade took place at the Sikh Temple on Rutland road.
This worldwide festival celebrates the Sikh new year and harvest spring festival, marking the day when Guru Gobid Singh created the Khalsa brotherhood in 1699.
Led by the BC Sikh Motorcycle Club, the parade included live music, performance acts, as well as free traditional cuisine all along the parade's route.
In addition to the larger than life floats from the Okanagan Sikh Temple and Miss Kelowna Lady of the Lake Society, the thousands of attendees marched alongside the parade with their friends and family, all throughout the Rutland neighborhood that is home to the temple.
People of all backgrounds took in the lively atmosphere of the event before and during the parade.
Before the parade began, the parking lot of the temple played host to many booths that featured everything from books, to traditional henna tattoos, and of course, the entrancing scent of authentic Indian cuisine.
With intensely bright colours, hypnotizing music and smiles as far as the eye can see, this event brought with it not only sunshine and celebration but a great afternoon well spent.
