Penticton residents recount fatal Monday morning shootings

Penticton residents are reeling after a shooting spree shook the town Monday morning.

Police have confirmed that four people are dead after targeted shootings took place at three locations all within a five-kilometre radius.

Downtown resident Joyce Brennan was taking out the recycling between 9:30 and 10 a.m. when she heard muffled bangs in the area.

“There is a lot of construction going on around us here, so I just assumed it was something to do with that,” said Brennan.

A short time later, Brennan’s son called to say someone had been killed near her house.

J&E Automotive Services Ltd. employee Shelley Halvorson was in her office around 10:30 a.m. when she heard a “pop, pop, pop, pop.”

“All of a sudden, all these cop cars were swarming the area, and an ambulance showed up, and we went outside and I saw a guy laying in the grass,” said Halvorson.

“We were told we had to get back inside because there was a guy — who shot this guy — who was on the loose with a rifle.”

According to Halvorson, three or four officers with rifles and a police dog charged down a nearby side street, while other police officers stayed behind and taped off the area.

“It’s a very quiet area, so it’s a little alarming for this to be happening.”

Less than a block away, Daniel Kenward also reported hearing gunshots before seeing an older man with grey hair lying motionless on the grass outside.

At approximately 11:30 am, a 60-year-old man matching the suspect's description turned himself into the Penticton RCMP detachment where he now remains in custody.

A second emergency response team was deployed Monday morning near Skaha Lake Road and Yorkton Ave, however, police have determined the incident was not linked to the morning's shootings.
