The RCMP is putting a historical sexual assault case back in the public eye in hopes that new information might lead to a breakthrough in the near-quarter-century-old file.
On Dec. 27, 2002, police were notified about an aggravated sexual assault involving a 19-year-old woman from Australia who was working in the area.
According to the RCMP, the victim sustained “serious injuries,” while the male suspect fled on foot and was never identified despite extensive investigative efforts.
The suspect was described as having brown hair and wearing a jacket that was either yellow or had yellow on it.
The probe has remained open since 2002 and a recent file review, along with advances in investigative techniques, has led police to re-examine the case.
“Advancements in investigative techniques have significantly enhanced our ability to revisit and progress historical investigations,” explained Cst. Ash Puri.
“We remain committed to pursuing all available leads, and we are hopeful that someone may come forward with information that could assist in identifying the suspect.”
Anyone with information on this historical case is urged to come forward and contact Cpl. Brent Lane of the West Kelowna RCMP at 250-768-2880. You can also report tips anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
The RCMP hopes that the passage of time may allow some individuals to recall details differently, or that circumstances may have changed to allow witnesses to come forward.
