Vigil being held tonight for slain Okanagan woman Tatjana Stefanski

Lumby will be the site of a vigil for an Okanagan woman who was the victim of a recent high-profile homicide.

Angie Clowry, who has created the Justice for Tatjana Facebook group, says the peaceful vigil will be held in Oval Park beginning at 7 pm.

She noted that the RCMP have promised to be “visibly present,” as per Lumby mayor Kevin Acton’s request, and it’s believed that BC United leader Kevin Falcon will be in attendance.

Attendees are encouraged to wear teal if possible, as it was Stefanski’s favourite colour.

Stefanski went missing on the morning of Saturday, April 13, and police later said the 44-year-old was potentially abducted.

Her family speculated that her ex-husband, Vitali Steffen, was behind her disappearance, but the RCMP has never confirmed those suspicions.

The following day, Stefanski’s body was found in a rural area near Mabel Lake and a suspect was arrested before being released from custody.

“As the community doesn't understand how a life can be taken without anyone immediately held in custody, many questions remain,” Clowry noted.

“It's challenging to understand why victims of intimate partner violence and their families feel unprotected as we all do when any crime happens to us or near us.”

Those planning to be at the vigil tonight are invited to pick up a lantern at the Lumby Christian Church (1962 Maple St.) between 3-6 pm. Supplies will be provided and donations are welcome.
