The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) continues to investigate the whale watching boating incident near Tofino which killed five people and has left one still missing.
The TSB has released new photos of the sinking of the Leviathan II as the field investigation continues. At this point, the investigation has revealed that most of the passengers and crew were on the top deck of the port when the vessel tipped. Investigators believe that this would have raised the centre of gravity, affecting the stability of the boat.
While the TSB continues its investigation, the RCMP called off the search for the missing Australian man on Wednesday. Rav Pillay, aged 27, has still not been found since the boat went down on October 25th with 24 people on board. Tragedy has struck a young woman who survived the incident as her father was one of the victims, and Pillay her boyfriend.
Danielle Hooker’s father Nigel, aged 63, died as a result of the capsizing. The search for her boyfriend, who is originally from Durban but lived in Sydney, was temporarily suspended because of difficult weather conditions.
But according to RCMP Cpl. Janelle Shoihet, the RCMP dive search team will continue the search on Thursday. There will also be air support, weather permitting, in addition to the RCMP boats and community boats helping on scene. As soon as weather permits, the dive team plans to be back in the water to search for Pillay.
Meanwhile, the TSB is examining the vessel and working to recover any electronics that were onboard that may help identify the exact position of the boat at the time of the capsizing. The vessel was the property of Jamie's Whaling Station and Adventure Centres.
