Police say an investigation is ongoing after a young girl reportedly overdosed on fentanyl last week.
The Mission RCMP said the 5-year-old spent time in hospital after coming into contact with the drug on Thursday night.
First responders were called to a home on Nottman Street around 9 pm after a report of a girl who was unconscious and receiving CPR.
The child was having a bath when she handled a jar containing fentanyl, and “began exhibiting signs of distress” soon afterwards.
After her breathing changed and she began vomiting, police said “adults in the house” called 911.
Paramedics administered multiple doses of Naloxone, which helped the girl’s condition to improve. The girl stayed in hospital overnight, and police said she is expected to recover.
The incident has prompted RCMP to remind the public of how dangerous fentanyl can be to people of any age, but especially to children.
“Anyone who keeps fentanyl in their residence should ensure it is always stored in a secure place, out of reach of anyone who is not intending on using it,” police said.
If you or someone else has come into contact with the drug, even through skin contact, seek medical attention immediately—regardless of whether symptoms have shown.
“Receiving a timely dose of Naloxone, as well as further medical care afterwards, is critical to increasing the chances of surviving a fentanyl overdose,” police added.
