Avalanche risk rated at high to extreme across western Canada due to powerful storm

Avalanche Canada is warning that they are expecting very large avalanches to occur today in BC.

According to officials, a number of large avalanches have already occurred in the Coast Mountains, Columbia and the Rockies.

“The avalanches have occurred in response to the recent storm snow and rising temperatures and, in some cases, have released on deeper layers in the snowpack,” said Avalanche Canada.

“These avalanches have the potential to knock down trees or run into unusual areas, such as valley bottoms.”

“If you travel in the backcountry during or immediately after the storm, we recommend staying well away from large avalanche paths, avoiding avalanche terrain, and sticking to forested or low-angle terrain. It will be wise to leave wider safety margins than usual.”

The Central Okanagan Search and Rescue (COSAR) team are also telling people to stay away from high risk areas, saying that the forecast looks “pretty angry across the board.”

“ We think this is a good weekend to stay out of the mountains, or at least stay on low risk terrain,” COSAR said.

“Rumour has it there’s a football game on Sunday to watch instead?”
