Investigators with the BC Highway Patrol (BCHP) are investigating a serious crash inside the Massey Tunnel on Tuesday afternoon.
The head-on collision between a Toyota Sienna and Mazda 3 resulted in the closure of the major Hwy 99 route through the Lower Mainland for several hours during rush hour.
According to police, the collision happened around 3:45 pm while one of the northbound lanes was being used as counterflow for southbound traffic.
“I was driving through the tunnel in the counterflow headed south and a white car started to enter my lane and I had to serve and almost hit the wall,” one witness said.
“When I looked in the rear view mirror they drove right into a van. The sound of impact was so loud. The front of the van was pushed in and I couldn’t see what happened to the car.”
The BCHP is hoping to gather more witness accounts and any dash cam footage from the area around the time of the crash.
“Anyone who saw the collision, or has dash cam video of the events leading up to the collision, is asked to call the BCHP as soon as possible,” said Cpl. Michael McLaughlin.
Police said both drivers were alone in their vehicles at the time of the collision and escaped the crash with “non-life-altering injuries.”
Those with information that could assist investigators in this case are urged to call the BCHP at 604-526-9744.
