Richmond RCMP say they are investigating a surge in meat thefts from local retailers, with nearly 40 incidents reported over the past few months.
Police say 39 thefts were reported between December 2025 and March 2026, with the volume and pattern suggesting some may be linked to organized activity.
Investigators believe some of the stolen meat could be resold through informal channels.
“Whether these thefts are opportunistic or part of a more coordinated effort, we are devoting resources to disrupting this crime trend,” said Const. Frank Bryson in a statement.
RCMP are warning the public not to buy meat from unverified sources, noting stolen products may have been improperly handled or exposed to unsafe temperatures.
Police are also asking shoppers and staff to report suspicious behaviour in grocery stores, such as individuals concealing items or placing large amounts of meat into personal bags.
Anyone with information, or who has been offered meat for sale outside a licensed retailer, is asked to contact Richmond RCMP.
