BC SPCA collecting donations for a dog who was surrendered after being hit by a car

A BC SPCA animal centre is currently raising funds to care for a dog that was recently surrendered into their care after he was hit by a car.

The dog, named Marley, was recently brought to an animal hospital in Abbotsford after suffering a serious injury to his hind left leg.

According to the BC SPCA, Marley’s owner made the tough choice to surrender him after they realized they couldn't afford the medical care needed to treat Marley’s injury.

After being entered into the hospital, the small dog was given pain medication and x-rays, which found he had a disclosed hip.

“This kind of injury is very painful and requires an expensive surgery to repair,” says Ashley Fontaine-Ost, the BC SPCA’s senior manager, Interior & Fraser Valley.

“We know this was an incredibly difficult decision but the guardian definitely did the right thing by surrendering Marley so he could receive the care he needs.”

Marley was brought to the BC SPCA’s Vancouver animal hospital for further examination to determine the best treatment option, which ended up being a femoral head ostectomy.

That is a surgical procedure where the ball part of the dog’s hip joint is removed, which will leave an empty socket and, over time, scar tissue will form into a “false joint”, the SPCA explains.

While awaiting surgery, Marley is staying with a foster volunteer and their dog Roxy.

“(Marley) is an extremely sweet and calm dog who is so trusting. I would like to think it is because he knows we are helping him,” says Fontaine.

Fontaine says Marley is really enjoying his time with his foster brother and “never stops wagging his tail, even in spite of his injury.”

Petsecure Pet Health Insurance will be matching all medical donations up to $3,500 to help cover the costs of Marley’s care. Anything leftover will go towards helping other animals in the BC SPCA’s care.

If you are able and interested in donating, you can find more information at this link.

According to Fontaine, Merely should be available for adoption in about four to six weeks.
