BC airport carjacker ordered to appear in court after refusing to emerge from cell

The man who pleaded guilty to a carjacking at Prince George Airport must appear in BC Supreme Court on May 19.

During a May 4 hearing, Crown prosecutor Rodney Withall told Justice Ronald Tindale that Tanner Jordan Meier’s lawyer remains suspended and that Meier refused to leave his cell to attend court via videoconference.

“So we have no idea whether Mr. Meier is taking steps to obtain new counsel,” Withall said.

“I don't know what avenue is left, other than to ask corrections to have Mr. Meier taken from his cell and brought before the court.”

Meier, 31, pleaded guilty Oct. 27 to robbery, dangerous driving causing bodily harm and assault related to the Aug. 24, 2024 theft of a vehicle at Prince George Airport (YXS).

Defence lawyer Kenneth Thomson has been under administrative suspension by the Law Society of BC since Jan. 13. Thomson told the Citizen he lost his bookkeeper and was unable to complete his annual trust report on time.

Tindale ordered Meier, who is in custody at the Kamloops Regional Correctional Centre, to appear in court in Prince George on May 19.

In December, Withall told the court the Crown intended to apply for Meier to be assessed to determine whether he could be designated a long-term offender.

If approved, a long-term offender designation would require a minimum two-year sentence, followed by a supervision order of up to 10 years.
