BC camper found dead after using device to send out SOS

A camper was sadly found dead near Port Alberni yesterday after using a device to send out an SOS message.

RCMP said that early Tuesday morning, police received a report from a Global Star SOS device signalling an SOS near Franklin River Road, just south of Port Alberni.

The device was associated with a 42-year-old man from Nelson, police confirmed.

A search of the area where the signal was located was done alongside the Alberni Valley Rescue Squad (SAR).

A campsite was located with what appeared to be recently felled trees and a small structure erected. The man’s vehicle was also found.

At about 8 am SAR located the man dead just a short distance from his campsite.

Due to location and terrain, the man had to be air lifted by helicopter.

Police and BC Coroner Service officials attended and conducted an initial examination of the man and the scene.

There were no indications of foul play and the man’s death is not considered suspicious. His family has been notified.
