BC community declares state of emergency after weekend deaths

Ahousaht, B.C., has declared a state of emergency after two "tragic losses" in the community over the weekend.

In a post to social media Ahousaht Administration says there will be a heightened police presence in the community and roads will be closed starting at 9 p.m.

One of the deaths has been confirmed by police while the Ahousaht Administration said the community was also grieving the loss of another young community member.

The administration says wellness supports are being made available to residents of the community, which is located on Flores Island about 18 kilometres from Tofino.

Mounties say in a press release issued Sunday that they had been called to a residence on Robinson Avenue around 6:30 p.m. Saturday and arrived to find paramedics providing medical aid to a man.

But they say he was immediately pronounced dead and another man was arrested in connection with the incident a short time later.

Police say it appears to be an isolated incident, the men knew each other and they believe there is no further risk to the public.
