Cutting edge technologies in AI are being applied to the natural resource sector in BC—with a particular focus on wildfire management.
Brent Tolmie from Genesis AI spoke with NowMedia about how their cutting-edge AI and machine learning technologies are being leveraged to tackle significant challenges like worsening wildfire seasons.
Genesis AI's innovative solutions are designed to prevent the catastrophic impacts of wildfires seen in recent years, equipping communities with the knowledge and tools needed to guard against future threats.
He explains that there is a huge importance to understanding tree science and how it can be integrated with technology to build more resilient communities.
Genesis AI is headquartered in Kelowna, but its reach extends across Canada. They have data scientists at UBCO, as well as in other cities like Nanaimo, Chilliwack and Saskatchewan.
"Focused on wildfire currently, because it’s such a huge problem in Canada. We’re seeing mass community evacuations like Fort Nelson this year and Yellowknife last year. Everybody in Kelowna understands what happens. It seems like every 20 years we’re getting these massive events that destroy structures," he noted.
Genesis AI approaches wildfire management by defining it as a “before, during, and after problem.”
Tolmie acknowledged the efforts of other companies and services in wildfire reporting and firefighting, such as Colson, Conair, and the BC Wildfire Service. He explained that Genesis AI's unique contribution lies in integrating these efforts with AI to build more resilient communities.
"We’ve taken data and trained it against real-time satellite data. It allows us to show communities where they’ve got too much fuel, where they could have a crown fire, where the historical fires came from in the past, and how the weather today could push fire in different directions," he said.
