BC conservation officer uses Special Provincial Constable status to pull over erratic driver

Here is a fun fact for your Friday evening.

Members of the BC Conservation Officer Service are also Special Provincial Constables.

We didn’t know that either, at least this writer didn’t, so we looked it up and learned this from British Columbia’s Police Act.

“Subject to the restrictions specified in the appointment and the regulations, a special provincial constable has the powers, duties and immunities of a provincial constable,” it explains.

On Thursday, a Lower Mainland conservation officer took advantage of that role in the name of public safety.

According to the BCCOS, the conservation officer noticed a vehicle driving erratically and had reasonable suspicion that they were impaired.

They safely stopped the vehicle and worked with the RCMP to take the driver off the road and into custody.

It’s good to know that the BC’s conservation officers aren’t just working to protect the environment and natural resources, they’re also contributing to making our communities safer in general!
