“Sometimes life gives you a sign” and sometimes drivers fail to abide by those signs.
That’s the case for a 19-year-old driver who was caught speeding and allegedly using a cell phone while driving right by a BC Highway Patrol (BCHP) officer.
At the end of June, the young Coquitlam driver was driving westbound on Highway 1 in Surrey.
However, the driver failed to notice the giant illuminated highway sign warning him that BCHP officers were ahead and patrolling for unsafe driving.

The officer, who was parked right under the sign, clocked the white Mercedes sedan hitting 134 k/h in the 100 zone.
“It’s alleged that the 19-year-old Coquitlam man who was driving didn’t see the warning sign, or the police officer, because he was also using his cell phone while speeding,” said Cpl. Michael McLaughlin in a news release.
As a result, the 19-year-old was handed several fines including $196 for speeding, $109 for a defective vehicle and $368 for using an electronic device while driving.
The Mercedes was impounded for seven days and the driver was handed a summons for a future court date.
The BCHP reminds all drivers to slow down to avoid getting ticketed and having their vehicles towed.
