BC driver uses 'engine test' excuse to try and avoid $483 speeding ticket

Testing new fuel injectors is not a good enough excuse to get out of a speeding ticket, say the BC Highway Patrol.

However, one driver attempted to use the excuse after being caught hitting 218 km/h in a 90 km/h zone.

The driver was caught hitting the excessive speed on Highway 1 near Ladysmith on Vancouver Island on April 25.

The BMW driver tried to tell the officers he was testing his car’s performance tune up, but it did not work.

“We have heard the ‘engine test’ excuse many times. Driving at the speed limit is enough of a test. If you need more speed, go to a racetrack and do it properly,” said Cpl. Michael McLaughlin.

The 31-year-old Nanaimo driver was handed a $483 fine for excessive speeding.

He will also have to pay the cost of the tow truck, the automatic seven-day impound and increase premiums from ICBC.

BC Highway Patrol officers across are on high alert as part of their annual High-Risk Driving and Motorcycle Awareness Campaign.
