A recent report from Work BC shows a slight raise in unemployment rates between May and June as the province experienced a 3,700 job decrease between the two months.
From May to June, there were 6,700 less workers employed in full-time positions (-0.3%); though, 3,000 part-time positions were made available for workers (+0.5%). The report also noted a 0.2% increase in unemployment from May.
Agriculture appears to have taken the biggest hit, with a 4,400 job reduction (-15.2%) being reported between the two months, while the Finance, Insurance, Real Estate and Leasing sector added 7,700 jobs (+5%).
Despite the overall loss in jobs reported, most BC regions have reduced unemployment rates since June last year.
The Thompson-Okanagan region reduced unemployment rates by 1.7% from 6.6% to 4.9%. Only the Kootenay region has had a collective raise in unemployment rates in BC, from 4.9% to 5.8% since 2018.
