The Government of BC is providing approximately $2 million in funding to the Justice Institute of BC (JIBC) to expand its paramedic programming.
Funding will go towards helping to deliver the primary care paramedic certificate program to over 100 students in Kelowna, Victoria, Chilliwack, New Westminster and Trail, as well as emergency medical responder training to approximately 30 participants in Prince George, Cranbrook and Port Alberni.
“Paramedics are the backbone of our emergency health services and our government is acting to strengthen our health system,” says Selina Robinson, the minister of post-secondary education and future skills.
Adrian Dix, the minister of health, says the government is investing in training opportunities for paramedics and other in-demand healthcare careers to ensure British Columbians have timely access to the care they need.
“When people need emergency care, paramedics are often the first on the scene, providing quality care and support for people and their families,” he explains.
The funding comes from the Community Workforce Response Grant, which supports in-demand skills training for communities and sectors, leading to secure and sustainable employment for British Columbians.
JIBC offers training at the expanded locations, and the funding may be used to pay for transportation and housing for participants travelling from other areas.
Since April 2021, the Community Workforce Response Grant has provided over $20 million in funding to communities and service providers to train more than 1,665 people in healthcare-related positions.
