The Surrey Police Service (SPS) says a police dog is recovering at home with his handler after being injured during an arrest earlier this week.
Police Service Dog (PSD) Lotto was part of the response to a theft-from-vehicle call in the 16900 block of 86A Avenue in Surrey early Monday morning.
Lotto and his handler were able to track one of two suspects into a nearby wooded area, but the dog was allegedly cut with a knife during the confrontation.
The suspect was taken into custody while Lotto recovered a knife and other property. The second suspect was arrested by other officers nearby.
Both suspects were processed and released on undertaking as the investigation continues. Lotto was taken to a veterinary clinic for treatment of minor injuries.
S/Sgt. Derek King, unit commander for the Lower Mainland District Integrated Police Dog Service, says his team plays a “vital role” in keeping communities safe and often works in “unpredictable and dangerous situations.”
“The bond between our dogs and handlers is extraordinary, so when one is injured, it affects us all,” he explained. “Their health and well-being are a priority, and we are happy to share that PSD Lotto is resting at home and expected to make a full recovery.”
S/Sgt. Lindsey Houghton expressed gratitude for Lotto’s bravery on behalf of the SPS and said the force is thankful his injuries aren’t more serious than they could have been.
“We hope he recovers quickly and is back on the streets soon to help keep us all safe.”
