A BC Police Service Dog was sent to an emergency veterinarian after being stabbed multiple times while responding to a report of a man in distress.
Police in Richmond received the report at about 2:30 am on Wednesday, which led them to a farm area in the community.
Officers attended the scene along with the Lower Mainland Integrate Police Dog Service.
The man was found and officers tried to engage with him to ensure his safety.
However, the man pulled an airgun, fired it and then allegedly stabbed the police dog.
A news release from the Richmond RCMP said the dog suffered multiple puncture wounds and had to be transported for emergency medical treatment, which is still ongoing.
“Following the initial assessment, the dog remains stable and recovery appears favourable,” the RCMP said in a news release.
The area was contained by police and the Lower Mainland Integrated Emergency Response team was called in to help apprehend the man, who was arrested at 7:35 am.
According to the news release, police believe this to be an isolated incident and that there is no risk to the public.
“Thanks to the quick response of our frontline members this event ended with the suspect being taken into custody,” says Chief Superintendent Dave Chauhan, Officer-in-Charge of the Richmond RCMP.
“On behalf of our community we would like to thank our integrated teams and recognize the PSD and their handler for their bravery and service.”
S/Sgt. Derek King said the detachment continues to monitor the condition of the police dog and support the handler.
The investigation is ongoing.
