BC’s 2024 home assessments are in and that means a few grant applications are opening this month.
This year, the homeowner grant has been set at a threshold of $2.15 million, which is expected to cover 92% of homes across the province.
Although the threshold is a bit higher than 2023, which saw a threshold of $2.125 million, the grant amounts remain the same.
The grants will provide as much as $570 relief on property tax bills for people living in the Capital Regional District, Fraser Valley Regional District and Metro Vancouver.
Anyone living outside those areas could be eligible for $770.
Seniors, veterans or people with disabilities can qualify for an additional grant for as much as $845 in the Capital Regional District, Fraser Valley Regional District and Metro Vancouver.
Outside of those areas, that additional grant jumps to as much as $1,045.
Last year, nearly a half million seniors and over 15,000 people with a disability received help from that additional grant, says BC’s Ministry of Finance in a release issued on Tuesday.
The province says the easiest time to apply for the grant is in May, once homeowners receive their BC Assessment and municipal or rural property tax notices.
However, those who want to apply can do so starting this month.
This can be done through the BC government website, at a ServiceBC center or through an automated self-service line at 1-888-355-2700.
Homeowners may also be eligible for BC’s Property Tax Deferment program, which is a low-interest program for people who meet the following criteria:
supporting a dependent child (Families with Children Program)
55 or older during the current year
a surviving spouse of any age
a person with disabilities
