BC teacher suspended after telling student: 'F*** you, bitch'

A former teacher in British Columbia, has agreed to a two-day suspension of his teaching certificate following incidents of professional misconduct including swearing at students and crossing boundaries while dealing with a bullying incident.

The suspension is outlined in a consent resolution agreement between Hussan Ali Riasat and the BC Commissioner for Teacher Regulation.

The Commissioner grouped the issues into two “matters” but combined them into a single investigation.

The first matter

In May 2021, Riasat became involved in a conflict among a group of students, including students A, B and C while working for the Surrey School District.

Riasat reportedly shared personal details about students, details about his personal life and mental state with the students, sent inappropriate messages and left a student a voicemail accusing the student of guilt-tripping him while he tried to resolve the conflict.

The teacher reportedly called student B’s behaviour “insanely childish and rude” and accused students B and C of engaging in “attention-seeking behaviour.”

Over a MS Teams message, Riasat asked student D if they knew anything about the conflict, accused students B and C of bullying student A and asked student D to intervene. He also said student C had a “bitchy attitude” and called them manipulative.

The Commissioner's report said Riasat he prepared and submitted a report to the schools principal but accused them of not doing enough, despite the vice-principal and principal meeting with the group of students in the third week of that September.

Riasat also reportedly met with Student E (the president of a school club) that month and had a conversation about student B’s behaviour, which resulted in them being removed from the club.

Riasat told student F to transfer out of a class he was teaching, accusing the student of being involved in the bullying. Student F was not involved with that friend group, however.

Riasat was a teacher sponsor for the school’s film club and administered the club’s instagram account. At one point he blocked students B, C, D and F from the account.

The school district issued Riasat a letter of discipline and suspended him for five days without pay in October 2023.

The second matter

In a separate incident in May 2024, Riasat reportedly used profane language and made an offensive gesture towards a Grade 9 student after overhearing a comment in a school hallway.

On June 14, 2024, Riasat worked after he had called in sick and administered an exam in breach of the district's policy.

“The student in question did not attend the school at which Riasat taught and wrote the exam which Riasat was invigilating at a local Starbucks, at about 5:45 pm,” the Commissioner wrote.

On June 17, 2024, the teacher resigned from the distinct, effective June 19, 2024.

Disciplinary action from the Commissioner

Riasat agreed that his behaviour constituted professional misconduct and agreed to the reprimand.

The Commissioner ordered he serve a two-day suspension of his teaching certification, which will be carried out from June 25-26, 2025.

The teacher was also ordered to complete a course about reinforcing respectful professional boundaries by Sept. 5, 2025.

The Commissioner noted Riasat’s repeated failure to maintain professional boundaries, model appropriate behaviour and treat students with acceptance, dignity and respect, though the Commissioner acknowledged Riasat’s acceptance of responsibility for the 2021 incidents.
