A novice BMW driver going more than double the speed limit and travelling in the opposite direction on Highway 1 was stopped by North Vancouver RCMP who handed out a pricey fine.
On May 1 around midnight, local Mounties were called about a 23-year-old driver speeding on Highway 1 near Capilano Road.
In an X post Monday, police said the driver was travelling 181 kilometres per hour – more than double the posted speed limit of 80 kilometres per hour.
“Instead of pulling over, the driver chose to flee from police,” the post said.
Shortly after, officers spotted the same BMW travelling at excessive speeds in the opposite direction on Highway 1, but this time mounties were able to stop the vehicle.
Recently, our officers attempted to stop this BMW on Hwy 1 after the driver was clocked travelling 181 km/h in an 80 km/h zone. Instead of pulling over, the driver chose to flee from police.

The novice driver was issued nearly $1,000 in fines and had their vehicle impounded.
Cpl. Mansoor Sahak, spokesperson for North Vancouver RCMP, stresses for drivers to be safe on the road and follow the rules.
“We often see the end result of people making that decision and the outcome was always tragic, especially when it comes to those excessively high speeds,” Sahak said. “The chance of you surviving in a crash while at that speed is very limited.”
Sahak said with the nicer weather, police typically see more high speed cases.
“It is concerning and that’s why we stepped up enforcement … taking vehicles away from these individuals who make that choice of putting others and themselves at risk,” he said.
Sahak said the driver was not the owner of the vehicle and police are submitting a report to the Superintendent of Motor Vehicles where he will most likely receive a suspension down the road.
