Numbers served by the area codes 604, 250, 778 and 236 are expected to be exhausted by May 2020.
The new area code will be 672 and it’ll service the entire province once it comes into use.
The province’s first area code, 604, was created in 1947 to serve the entire province, but now covers the Lower Mainland, Fraser Valley, Sunshine Coast and Howe Sound.
Area code 250 was created in 1996 to split up the province’s numbers and serves most of the province, including Vancouver Island.
In 2001, area codes 778 and 236 were both created as overlays, with 778 immediately being put into service in the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley.
It was extended to the entire province in 2007, and in 2013 the 236 area code was made active for the entire province as well.
