Police were called to Vancouver International Airport (YVR) over the weekend to deal with what they have called “an aggressive passenger.”
According to the Richmond RCMP, the passenger was on a flight that had arrived at the airport shortly after noon on Sunday.
Officers were told that the passenger had allegedly assaulted someone travelling with them during the flight to Vancouver.
“Based on the individual’s behavior, airline staff determined they posed a potential safety risk to staff and passengers and were restrained,” explained a Richmond RCMP release.
When Mounties boarded the flight after it landed at YVR, they began a lengthy attempt to de-escalate the situation.
Eventually, the situation came to a peaceful end with police apprehending the passenger under Section 28 of the Mental Health Act.
“While escorting the passenger off of the flight, they were actively resisting by biting and spitting on our officers,” the Richmond RCMP release noted. “For the safety of our officers and the public, a spit hood was placed on the individual.”
The passenger was ultimately arrested and brought into custody. Police did not say whether charges would be recommended against them.
