B.C.’s Liquor Distribution Branch (LDB) has announced plans for its chain of non-medical cannabis stores.
The stores will operate under the brand BC Cannabis Stores, aligning with the LDB’s existing BC Liquor Stores brand.
The brand, which was developed in-house, will be used by the LDB as it creates a new and separate business operation to support the wholesale distribution of cannabis.
The first of these government-operated retail stores is expected to be opened by the end of the summer, once cannabis is legalized federally.
Also in the works is a platform for online sales, which the LDB began exploring options for when these stores were first announced in February.
BC Cannabis Stores will be permitted to sell dried cannabis, seeds and cannabis oils that comply with federal requirements.
Edibles are expected to be available within 12 months of legalization.
They may also sell cannabis accessories like rolling papers, holders, pipes, bongs and more, depending on the final terms of the federal Cannabis Act.
Unlike BC Liquor Stores, however, minors will not be permitted to enter BC Cannabis Stores, even if they are accompanied by a parent or guardian.
There will also be a sales limit of 30 grams to an individual at one time, which will be in effect for both government and privately run cannabis stores.
