Keela arrived at the shelter with extremely red, painful, inflamed eyes, which left her with no vision, said the SPCA.
“Her eyes were difficult to look at,” says Jamey Blair, the BC SPCA’s senior manager for the interior, north region of BC.
“They were so red and swollen. It was clear she was in a great deal of discomfort and was unable to see.” Blair adds that Keela’s nose was rubbed raw, she had overgrown nails, and her teeth and mouth were not in good shape.
The SPCA added that “it was obvious” that Keela had not received veterinary care for some time, and was immediately brought to a clinic.
A veterinarian confirmed that the inflammation in Keela’s eyes was caused by high pressure and could not be managed with medication or repaired surgically. Keela would need to have both of her eyes removed.
“She is a very friendly, social dog,” says Blair. “Even when Keela arrived at the animal centre in pain and blind, she responded so well to everyone she met. She was just as sweet at the veterinary clinic.”
Blair adds that Keela has bounced back quickly from both eye surgeries.
She is scheduled for a dental examination, which will determine if she also needs oral surgery.
