The Nanaimo RCMP is probing a shooting that happened in a residential neighbourhood over the weekend.
According to police, the mid-morning Saturday shooting resulted in a dog being shot, but the animal fortunately survived after being treated by an emergency veterinarian.
Officers were called to the scene near the intersection of Holly Avenue and Rosehill Street shortly before 10 am for reports of gunshots.
“Initial reports were that a dog had been shot and that two individuals had fled in a white SUV,” noted an RCMP release.
The release added that the dog is a large mixed breed and is now recovering at home after receiving medical treatment.
Investigators believe the involved parties are known to each other and the shooting came after a “heated argument” in the street.
“Anytime a firearm is discharged in a public neighbourhood there is significant risk, particularly in this case as there was an elementary school in close proximity,” said R/Cst. Gary O’Brien.
Anyone who lives in the area is asked to review their home surveillance systems or dash cameras from Saturday morning.
Investigators are specifically looking for footage from between 9:15-9:55 am that shows a white SUV or individuals associated with that vehicle.
Those with relevant information or footage that could assist investigators with this probe are urged to contact the Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345.
