Girl Guide members are out across British Columbia fundraising through their popular cookie program.
Purchasing a box or two, or five, of Girl Guide cookies is a great way to support youth programs in your community.
Unfortunately, as the Better Business Bureau (BBB) warns, scammers are now exploiting this cherished Canadian tradition by posing as Girl Guide cookie sellers online.
“Recent reports show fraudulent ads circulating on social media promoting ‘Girl Guide cookies’ for sale in BC,” notes a BBB statement. “These posts often overcharge, request e-transfers and never deliver any cookies.”
The BBB is urging consumers to stay vigilant and ensure they’re buying cookies directly from Girl Guide members, whether that’s at a booth outside a local business, a community event or a child you know.
“Unfortunately, scammers often exploit moments of goodwill and try to capitalize on trusted brands and causes,” explained Neesha Hothi from the BBB’s Mainland BC division.
“By purchasing cookies directly from official sources, you can ensure your support goes directly to where it’s truly intended, to the next generation.”
Those craving some Girl Guide cookies can utilize the official Cookie Finder tool to locate authorized sales in their area where they’ll be able to pay by cash or card.
“Girl Guide cookies are one of those feel-good traditions that bring communities together across Canada,” Hothi added. “By supporting the Girl Guides, you’re helping empower young leaders in our community.”
Girl Guide cookies in Canada are sold during two main campaigns each year, starting with the classic chocolate and vanilla sandwich cookies from roughly March until June.
The second campaign, which has just begun, runs through the end of the year and sees the Girl Guide members sell the always-popular chocolatey mint cookies.
