Dozens of speed cameras now operational across BC

Dozens of speed cameras are now active across British Columbia, the provincial government has announced.

All 35 of the so-called “intersection safety cameras” are now in place, with all but one of them operating 24/7.

One of the cameras – in Nanaimo – has had its activation postponed till Sept. 2020.

Between July and September 2019 – when the province had five cameras active – over 20,000 speeding tickets were issued.

That included 23,883 red light tickets and 2,370 speeding tickets.

The highest speed the cameras captured was 174 km/h in an 80 km/h zone.

Between October and December last year, another 20,907 red light tickets were issued by between 10 and 15 operational cameras.

There were 7,353 speeding tickets issued over the same period.

The highest speed captured on cameras during that time was 154 km/h in an 80 km/h zone.

Tickets issued using the cameras carry fines but not penalty points.
