Final destination: Young mom and child survive terrifying incident on Vancouver bridge

A young mom and her child narrowly escaped a Final Destination-like demise on the Ironworkers Memorial Bridge Friday afternoon.

“This was a bizarre chain of events and it’s a miracle nobody was killed or seriously injured,” said Sgt. Steve Addison.

They were travelling over the bridge into Vancouver around 2 pm when a massive metal beam impaled the windshield of their vehicle.

Police believe a truck, heading the other way into North Vancouver, lost part of its load and dropped the beam, which bounced off the concrete, over the median and into oncoming traffic.

“We think the driver of the truck likely had no idea what happened, and continued on to the North Shore,” Addison explained.

The incident caused significant afternoon delays on the busy bridge, but it was simply a fortunate outcome that no one was hurt or killed.

Police officers gave the woman and her child a ride home.

The VPD’s collision investigation unit is now trying to identify the truck driver and are urging any witnesses, or people with relevant dash cam footage, to come forward.
