Firearms destroyed in Tumbler Ridge not related to mass shooting: RCMP

Mounties in Tumbler Ridge have issued a statement to dispel rumours about the handling of evidence in February’s tragic mass shooting.

Community members recently found 20 firearms that were destroyed by police, which led to speculation that they were connected to the Feb. 10 incident.

However, police say there is “no connection whatsoever” between the firearms that were recently destroyed and the weapons used two months ago.

According to the RCMP, the “firearms” found by community members were seized during investigation between 2016-24.

They were no longer legally classified as firearms, as they had been rendered inoperable through an approved destruction process.

“All firearms related to the February tragedy are currently being held by the North District Major Crime Unit as part of their ongoing investigation,” clarified Sgt. Ian Rissanen. “None of the firearms destroyed as part of this routine process are connected to that event.”

The RCMP statement says it understands the concern these rumours may cause and encourages community members with questions or concerns to contact the detachment directly.
