Harbour seal finds itself in the mouth of a Humpback whale in BC waters

A whale touring excursion from Victoria saw an unusual sight unfold recently.

Eagle Wings Whale Watching Tours was out with a group on the morning of Sept. 12, 2024, when a Humpback whale appeared.

The whale, known as “Zillion,” lunged after a school of fish, but got more than it bargained for.

A small harbour seal got scooped up into the whale’s mouth and got the “ride of its life.”

A photographer on the tour, Tomis Filipovic, was able to capture the moment in a perfectly timed photo.

The tour company says the seal was never in danger of actually being swallowed, as Humpback whales have very narrow throats—about the size of a grapefruit.

“We watched Zillion try to close her mouth several times before the seal managed to spill out, apparently unharmed!” the tour company added.
