The loved ones of a young mother and baby killed by a falling tree at Comox Lake last week are reeling in the wake of their unexpected deaths.
“We are heartbroken by the tragedy that took place,” said a family statement provided through the RCMP this afternoon.
The 26-year-old woman and her five-month-old infant, now identified as Lynae and Elias, were fatally injured by the tree at Comox Lake around 1:45 pm on Thursday, July 31, police explained the following day.
According to the Lake Park Society, it happened at the Cumberland Lake Park Campground beach near the southeast corner of the lake.
The RCMP said first responders made every effort to save their lives, but the mother was pronounced dead at the scene and the baby passed away later in hospital.
“Thank you to the police, paramedics and people on the beach who tried to save our beautiful babies who we know are safe in the arms of Jesus,” the family statement added. “We are so grateful.”
The family has requested continued privacy at this time, but said a community gathering will be held at Comox Marina Park at 6 pm on Sunday, Aug. 10.
The gathering will be meant to “share in the love” that Lynae and Elias brought to this Earth, the family said, and to thank the community for its support.
Anyone wanting to make a donation in honour of Lynae and Elias can do so through the Nesting Place Society.
