Here's 15 fun facts about our province to celebrate B.C. Day

The first Monday of August is known as B.C. Day in the province of British Columbia, where the holiday was established in 1974.

There are few places on earth more beautiful than British Columbia in the middle of summer and this statutory holiday gives residents the chance relax while enjoying the surrounding amenities.

In celebration of the long weekend dedicated to B.C., we've compiled a list highlighting 15 interesting facts that make the province on the of best places one earth:

1. B.C. was the sixth province added to Canada, joining the confederation on July 20, 1871.
2. The eco-activist group Greenpeace was formed in Vancouver in 1971.
3. Mile 0 of the 7,699-kilometre Trans Canada Highway (the largest national highway in the world) is located in Victoria.
4. Osoyoos Lake is the warmest freshwater lake in Canada.

5. Fairweather Mountain is the highest point in B.C. at 4,663 metres (or 15,299 feet).
