Injured hiker airlifted from West Coast Trail after falling down embankment

Rescuers airlifted an injured hiker who nearly fell off a cliff.

The Alberni Valley Rescue Squad and Arrowsmith Search and Rescue teamed up after receiving a call from Pacific Rim National Parks on the afternoon of Oct. 7, 2024.

A hiker on the West Coast Trail had fallen down a steep embankment, landing only a few metres away from the edge of a cliff.

The park;s safety team found the hiker, and communicated the location to Search and Rescue.

Airspan Helicopters and the regional Class D Fixed Line (CDFL) team sent two technicians down to meet with parks staff, who had already administered first aid to the hiker.

Rescuers said that luckily the hiker suffered only a lower limb injury, and they were flown to Port Renfrew and transferred to hospital via ambulance.

The trail is closed for the season, and the injured hiker was one of the last hikers of the season.
