Island police warn residents to protect pets and livestock after bear kills llama

Police on Vancouver Island are warning residents to protect their pets and livestock after a bear killed a llama on Monday.

Saanich Police said they were called at about 4 pm about the bear and, when they arrived, saw it carrying the llama away.

The Conservation Officer Service was brought out to the scene but failed to find the bear.

“It is believed that this bear is not frightened of humans and will possibly return to the area overnight,” police said, adding that “plans are in place to re-attend” if the bear is spotted again.

They added: “We are recommending residents to be alert and aware of this latest bear incident and take measures to protect any livestock or pets they may have.”
