One of British Columbia’s most successful capitalist enterprises has been mocked online after advertising a workshop on how to “resist capitalism.”
Multi-billion-dollar Vancouver-headquartered retailer Lululemon posted a flyer to Instagram for an event being hosted by one of its “ambassadors,” a yoga instructor named Rebby Kern.
Her “Decolonizing Gender” workshop, which will be delivered over Zoom next week, promises to show participants how to “unveil historical erasure” and “resist capitalism.”
Kern added: “Hang with me to get the download [sic] on how gender constructs across the world have informed culture and the ways violent colonialism has erased these histories to enforce consumerism, gender stereotypes and misunderstanding of gender diverse communities.”
Lululemon was roundly teased on social media for its apparent faux pas, with many users highlighting the company’s often costly apparel, which is manufactured by workers around the world.
Many also highlighted the firm’s impressive second-quarter results, which were made public on Sept. 8.
Lululemon made $903 million in revenue, with a gross profit of $489.5 million.
Its shares have been trading at over $300 apiece since the spring.
The firm told NowMedia that the workshop hosted by Kern “does not represent the company’s views.”
A spokeswoman added: “We have since removed the post.”
