While progress in rebuilding Lytton has been slow since a wildfire destroyed much of the village in 2021, a special milestone was reached on Friday.
Members of the community gathered to celebrate the completion of a new public works building, the community's first municipal building to be rebuilt since the 2021 fire.
“The Village of Lytton is thrilled to celebrate the completion of the public works building,” said Mayor Denise O’Connor.
“This is the first permanent municipal building to be rebuilt and is a tangible sign that Lytton continues to move forward.”
Construction of the building was funded by a $1 million grant from the province and $52,328 from the Village’s resources.
“Today marks a significant milestone in the Village of Lytton’s recovery from the devastating wildfire in 2021,” said Kelly Greene, minister of emergency management and climate readiness.
“The new public works building provides a permanent and secure space for the municipality to better support the community with essential public services.”
O’Connor added that the community’s officials look forward to celebrating other rebuilding milestones in the future, which could be a variety of projects.
According to the Village, the architectural drawings for the new village office are 50% complete, a funding application has been submitted for a permanent fire hall, water and sewer repairs are underway, and the design for a community hub is in the works as officials prepare to submit a request for proposal for a pool’s design and construction.
