Man charged in triple shooting in the NWT arrested in Kelowna

A Surrey man who is facing murder charges in a small town in the Northwest Territories was arrested in Kelowna last week.

Krystian Cogswell, 22, was the subject of a Canada-wide warrant in connection to a shooting in Fort Providence, a small community about 315 kilometres west of Yellowknife.

On Mar. 15, shortly before 1 am, Fort Providence RCMP received a series of calls indicating that three people had been shot in a house.

A 31-year-old man was found dead at the scene.

Another man was found on the scene and taken to the small community’s health centre.

A third man was already taken to the health centre before police arrived and had to be airlifted to Yellowknife for emergency treatment.

The Northwest Territories RCMP Major Crime Unit charges Cogswell with one count of murder, one count of attempted murder and two counts of aggravated assault.

The NWT RCMP say Cogswell was found in a house in Kelowna on May 15 after the Kelowna RCMP’s Emergency Response Team executed an unrelated search warrant on behalf of the Surrey Police Service.

The 22-year-old has been held in custody since being arrested and will be transported back to the NWT to face charges of murder and aggravated assault.

At the time of the shooting, the RCMP said Cogswell is also wanted on a separate warrant from the Inuvik RCMP Detachment in connection with drug trafficking offences from July of 2024.

When the shooting happened, Cogswell was subject to bail conditions that required him to reside in British Columbia and not to be present in the Northwest Territories, police said.
